It is an example of how much Major League Soccer has progressed with the league taking a break for internationals and that is all to the good as no less than seven Sporting Kansas City players are going to join international outfits.

At the youth level is the lone 2013 MLS Draft pick Mikey Lopez who has been called up by the United States U-20 team for a tournament in Toulon, France in preparation for the FIFA U-20 tournament that will take place later this summer. As being part of the team during its qualification for the tournament during the CONCACAF U-20 tournament prior to the start of the MLS season. Lopez will miss out on his chance to make an appearance during the US Open Cup 3rd round match against USL PDL side Des Moines which would be the first time Lopez could make his Sporting debut.

The most interesting call-up must be the Lebanon national team calling up Soony Saad for a friendly against Oman on May 29. Having only recently qualified to be called up this will not permanently tie him to the country until he appears in a competitive match but considering his age and the possibilities he could be one of the better players for Lebanon, who are on the up internationally, who will look to use their improvement from making the final World Cup qualification round for Asia. Lebanon might be looking for Saad to bolster their Asian Cup qualifying campaign as has only started.

Kei Kamara has been called up by the new Sierra Leone manager Johnny McKinstry as the next round of World Cup qualifiers occur. Sierra Leone are currently in second place behind Tunisia and face the leaders at home on June 8 and then visit bottom of the table Cape Verde on June 15.

Graham Zusi and Matt Besler have been called up for the United States camp for the friendlies on May 29 and June 2 against Belgium and Germany as they prepare for the three World Cup qualifiers on June 7, 11, 18. Zusi has been part of the US set up for some time and is most likely to be called up for the qualifiers and extending his national team stay, with a rapreve during the Gold Cup to offer the opportunity for other players to make their mark. Besler made an impession against Mexico but might not make the squad for the qualifiers, if so he is a shoe in for the Gold Cup squad in July.

Mechack Jerome and Peterson Joseph have been called up by Haiti for friendlies against Spain in Miami, Florida on June 8 and Italy in Rio de Janeiro June 12. There is a strong chance that both will be called up for Haiti for the Gold Cup in July as they have been drawn into Group B along with Trinidad and Tobago, El Salvador, and Honduras.

Let’s lay a few ground rules before we get this underway…

-The real U-23 squads in the US Open Cup (Portland, Seattle, Orlando, New York) are NOT professionals who also happen to be on the senior roster of their respective teams. I’m breaking that rule for Columbus.

-Unfortunately, there aren’t enough players 23 or younger on the Crew to fill an 18 man gameday roster.

Now that we’ve got that out of the way, let’s take a look at what the Crew have to work with. This exercise was inspired by the lack of creativity and ingenuity shown by Robert Warzycha, even when faced with a growing injury list.

Goalkeepers (2): Matt Lampson (23), Daniel Withrow (22)

Defenders (4): Chad Barson (22), Drew Beckie (22) , Kyle Hyland (22), Kevan George (23)

Midfielders (4): Wil Trapp (20), Shawn Sloan (22), Ben Speas (22), Ethan Finlay (22)

Forwards (3): Aaron Horton (21), Aaron Schoenfeld (23), Ryan Finley (22)

I know, I know…it’s going to be tough just to fill out a lineup. But what kind of fake coach would I be if I couldn’t mold this short handed bunch into a US Open Cup contender.

So what’s my starting formation? Have a look…

Lampson

Barson – Beckie – George – Hyland

Trapp

Speas               –               Finlay

Sloan

Schoenfeld  -  Finley

Matt Lampson is the easiest selection here and thankfully he has a decent backup in Marshall product Daniel Withrow. Homegrown signing Chad Barson is capable of playing on the right or in the middle, but Drew Beckie and Kevan George are more physically imposing and thus better suited for the center back pairing. Kyle Hyland already has a couple assists from the left side of the backline; the senior team’s most short handed position. It wouldn’t be a bad idea to trot him out there if Agustin Viana is out long term and Tyson Wahl doesn’t improve.

We know all about each wide midfielder, but Wil Trapp and Shawn Sloan haven’t been seen as much. Trapp is an excellent tactical fit as a holding midfielder. He’s calm, cool, and collected on the ball and is a good passer out of the back. Unfortunately, he may get run over with his diminutive stature. He’s only 20 though, so maybe he can squeeze in another inch or two in height. Shawn Sloan has played all over the midfield throughout his high school/college career, but he managed to scored 58 goals and serve 40 assists in high school. He also had seven assists as a junior in college and ten in his senior year so he’s more than capable of distributing.

And thankfully, he has two very stellar forwards to whom he can distribute. Ryan Finley is a clinical finisher with his head and both feet while Aaron Schoenfeld has already shown us (in limited first team action) that he can hang with MLS defenders.

So how will this side fair in the US Open Cup?

Here’s what the bracket looks like:

http://thecup.us/2013-us-open-cup-bracket/

So the U-23 Crew will get the winner of Dayton Dutch Lions and Dearborn Stars SC. Even though Dearborn pulled off a shocker over the USL’s Michigan Bucks, I still like Dayton Dutch Lions to win and set up the revenge match. Several guys on this squad have been on the fringe with the first team and most of the others have impressed in the Reserve League.

Crew U-23 2-1 Dayton Dutch Lions

Crew U-23 goals: Finley & Speas

On to the next one! Assuming this is the real bracket (I don’t know if the pairings are 100% accurate) the Crew U-23 team gets a date with the winner of the LA Galaxy and Carolina Dynamo/Carolina Railhawks. Even if the Galaxy take this one off, I still like them to get past the winner of the Carolina duel.

Crew U-23 1-2 LA Galaxy

Crew U-23 goal: Finley

Unfortunately this would be the worst possible draw for the Crew if it held up; especially if the U-23 squad has to go on the road to California. Even the scrubs at LA Galaxy have enough to beat this Crew U-23 side, but it would be a very close match. With a better draw this team would be more than capable of advancing to the quarterfinals over a “senior” MLS side (depending on who takes it seriously).

So even though the lads in black and yellow couldn’t break through to the quarterfinals, they’ve still shown us that Robert Warzycha has plenty of options in his back pocket that he will no doubt waste. Ryan Finley is the best (aka most MLS ready) player on this squad with Ben Speas right behind him. I really want to see what Chad Barson and Drew Beckie can do in defense. Beckie’s college highlights were solid and he showed Josh Williams-type athleticism. When Wil Trapp finally gets back from his national team duties, he’ll be well seasoned and hungry to prove himself. He’s already told his travel days off between USMNT U-20 and Crew duties to eff-off so we know he’s a hard worker.

Thoughts? Agree or disagree?

Jimmy+Nielsen+New+England+Revolution+v+Sporting+ CxreTGgmaLl Sporting KC goalkeeper Jimmy Nielsen releases new book

Major League Soccer’s Goalkeeper of the Year for 2012, Jimmy Nielsen has established himself as one of the best players in the League and a fan favorite in Kansas City. Yet while supporters are familiar with his achievements on the field and larger-than-life personality off it, few are aware of the remarkable story that led him to the Midwest. That story is now told in Nielsen’s new book, Welcome to the Blue Heaven, Don’t Bet Against the Goalkeeper from Ascend Books.

Compared from a young age to Denmark’s greatest ever goalkeeper – Peter Schmeichel – Nielsen was scouted by Manchester United and a host of other leading European clubs, but at the point when he should have been building a great career he was instead developing a ferocious gambling habit. In 1999 he was dropped from Denmark’s Under-21 team after missing curfew due to a lost night at the roulette table.

Nicknamed ‘Casino Jimmy’ by rival supporters, Nielsen continued to gamble – the stakes getting so high that he was able to win $500,000 on a single night at one casino, then throw more than half of that away at the same venue a day later. His losses finally caught up to him in 2004, when his inability to pay off a gambling debt helped put a major bookie out of business in his hometown.

Avoiding bankruptcy only with financial assistance from his soccer club and with the support of a family he feared would desert him, Nielsen gradually pieced his life back together. But in his playing career he remained unfulfilled. He had spent almost his entire career with Aalborg, the team he supported as a boy, starting a record 398 games and winning the Danish championship in 1999, but he dreamed of a fresh challenge.

That seemed at last to have arrived in 2007 when he was signed by the English club Leicester City. Instead he left after just six months and without playing a single game – frozen out by a coach who had never wanted to sign him in the first place. He returned to Denmark with a new team, Vejle, but never settled.

Were it not for a phone call from Kansas City in January 2010, that might have been the end of the story. Despite still performing to a high level, Nielsen was contemplating retirement when he was offered a contract by an American club that he didn’t even know existed. He said yes.

Nielsen could not even have pointed out Kansas City on a map at that stage but three years on he is the happiest he has ever been. Moving to America has not been without its challenges – from his daughter’s demand that their pet gerbil come with them, to having his face cut open by a bobblehead doll that was thrown at him by a fan during a game.

But the warmth of the Midwest, the unique passion of Sporting Kansas City’s fans and the standard of Major League Soccer – easily as high, in Nielsen’s opinion, as that in Denmark – have given him a new lease on life. Now Nielsen wants to share his story with the fans who have taken him to their hearts, and who have made him feel that he is, at last, at home in blue.

Nielsen’s story comes to life in his new book, “Welcome to the Blue Heaven, Don’t Bet Against the Goalkeeper,” by Jimmy Nielsen with Paolo Bandini from Ascend Books. Available now at retailers such as Rally House, Kansas Sampler, Barnes & Noble, and Books-A-Million (suggested retail $24.95); online at amazon.com and as an ebook on Amazon Kindle, Apple iPad and other popular platforms.

Excerpts from Welcome to the Blue Heaven, Don’t Bet Against the Goalkeeper

From Chapter 1: The World’s Most Expensive Gerbil

“This was no ordinary pet. Otto was, without a doubt, the most expensive gerbil ever to have lived. We didn’t know it when we bought him. Back then, Otto cost the same as any other gerbil, about $50 when you include the cage, the water bottle and other basic supplies. But getting him to America? That took thousands of dollars.”

From Chapter 13: Gambling Gets Serious

“I was only there for an hour and I lost $350,000, more than half of what I had won the night before… I was very good at hiding how much I had won or lost, to the point that not even my closest gambling buddies knew the extent of my betting… I risked too much, took my loved ones for granted and made too many bad decisions to ever recount.”

From Chapter 18: A Phone Call From Out of the Blue

“The message said it was from an agent I’d never heard of, asking whether I might be interested in playing for Kansas City. I texted him back saying yes, and asking when I might hear more… My phone rang two minutes later. Over the next hour (Peter Vermes and I) shared one of the most exciting and motivational conversations of my entire life.  He told me about the team, his vision for how it could get bigger, and how soccer was growing in America. He told me about Kansas City itself and what a great place it was to live…All I could think was…I want to play for this guy!”

Young Player to Watch: FWD Jack McInerney, DEF Ray Gaddis

Outlook: A relative newcomer to MLS, the Philadelphia Union have shown in just three seasons that they are steadily building a team for future success. While many franchises have started off swinging in MLS, the Union have taken the path of developing young talent and taking their lumps in their first few seasons.

Although they did have some success in 2011 with a team featuring Le Toux, Colombian Goalkeeper Farid Mondragon, and Midfielder Freddy Adu, 2012 was more accurate about the team’s development. I have never been a fan of former Union coach Petr Nowak as he seems to be from the Bobby Knight mold of coaching: yell at your players, lose your marbles, and toss things around. For a young team like the Union that would seem to be counter-productive to development. So far, I really like the work that John Hackworth has done with the Union. Since taking over the Union, Hackworth has a record of 11-13-6, which is a dramatic improvement from their 2012 team under Nowak. With a team that has seven rookies on their roster and five players over the age of 30, their will be growing pains this season.

When you get a chance to watch the Union, the first thing that you notice is how good Jack McInerney is on and off the ball. As forward, his vision of the field is impeccable. He always seems to be able to find the open spaces in the defense and his excellent footwork. So far this season he has scored over 6 goals, which leads MLS, and I would not be surprised if he will score at least 20. Mr. Klinsmann, if you are looking for young American strikers have a bit of imagination to them, this is your guy.

What makes McInerney even more dangerous is that his strike partner Conor Casey. One of MLS’ most feared strikers, Casey has scored over 50 goals in six MLS seasons. A big tall forward, Casey is able to down headers into the box with ease and is able to take vicious hits from the defense and keep on trucking. While he and McInerney have taken a few games to mesh with each other, their work on D.C. United on Sunday shows promise for the two for the rest of the MLS campaign. Also, if you ever get the chance, make sure to watch Sheanon Williams take throw ins. He may not be able to do the cartwheel throw-in that impressed every high schooler in the 1990’, but he has a cannon.

While the Union’s offense seems to be clicking, their defense still leaves a lot to be desired. While watching them the past few matches, you could definitely tell that their backline is still trying to figure out their roles. Having a veteran defender like Jeff Parke should be able to provide some veteran leadership in what seems to be a very young group. The one player I was impressed during the D.C. United match was Ray Gaddis. A product of the University of West Virginia (go Mountaineers!) Gaddis was not fazed by the footwork of Raphael Augusto and Carlos Ruiz during the United match. Often you can tell the talent disparity in MLS by the players who get bought by the step-over move. Mr. Gaddis stuffed United on multiple occasions and showed incredible poise against seasoned strikers.

Even though Gaddis and Parke are quality players, players like Amobi Okugo and Bakary Soumare have not played to their caliber. And while Chris Albright may have been the future of U.S. Soccer 13 years ago, he should not be anything more than a bit player for this squad. Their goalkeeping is also suspect. Starting keeper Zac McMath has been very disappointing so far this year. On too many occasions he has made poor decisions on his clearances and does not seem to have his backline composed. Still, in what seems to be a running theme for this column, he is still only 21 years old and there is still plenty of room for growth. While backup Chris Konopka has some experience in MLS and in the League of Ireland (Ireland’s top flight division,) it may make sense for the Union to invest in a solid veteran backup as the season progresses.

I could write 20,000 words on the subject of Freddy Adu, the highs and lows of his career, how he has never lived up to his hype and who is to blame for that. I am not going to do that. He plays for Bahia, not the Philadelphia Union. I will say that at 23 (or even his real age of 27) he has accomplished quite a bit and still has plenty of time to do more . Playing professional soccer not only in the United States, but also in Europe and featuring for one’s national team is quite an achievement for any person. Perhaps he has not lived up to the expectations leveled on him. That is on him and the American soccer system. Nonetheless, I tip my cap to him because being able to do what he has done, even if he will never be the next Messi, is a pretty cool thing.

The Philadelphia Union are going to be one of the more interesting teams to watch this year. Not because they will be competing for the MLS Cup or the Supporter’s Shield. This team has the potential to be a serious player in Major League Soccer for many years. While a late season playoff push is possible, they just do not have the experience in the net or in their backline to make it to the fall football classic.

Beer of Choice:

HopBack Amber Ale, Troegs Brewing Company

While it would be easy to just say that if you are at a Union game that you should drink a Yuengling or a Keystone Light, both of which are Pennsylvania brews, the true gem of Pennsylvania breweries is the Troegs Brewing Company. A beer with 6% Alcohol By Volume, the Hopback Amber Ale has a nice mix of malt and hops which kind of works well the flashy playing style of McInerney and the simple, straightforward Casey. It also has a bit of a peppery, dry taste at the end of it which sums up the Union supporters pretty well.

int 130509 Sounders SportingKC hl Sporting KC suffers 1 0 loss to Seattle Sounders FC

The Seattle Sounders FC defeated Sporting Kansas City 1-0 in front of a sold-out crowd on Wednesday night at Sporting Park.A 94th minute goal from Djimi Traore sent the Sounders home with three points.

Kei Kamara made his first appearance for Sporting Kansas City since returning from his loan stint with Norwich City FC and Josh Gardner made his first start as a Sporting Kansas City player.

Sporting Kansas City’s first chance of the match came a mere 15 seconds in when Jacob Peterson dispossessed defender Zach Scott, sped down the left flank and fired a low shot that was saved by goalkeeper Michael Gspurning.

In the 13th minute, Sporting came close on another chance when C.J. Sapong took an attempt from the top of the box that floated just wide of the far post.

Seattle nearly went up a goal in the 20th minute of play when Mario Martinez played in a long ball that Brad Evans just barely clipped over the crossbar with a well-timed header.

Five minutes later, the home side followed up with a chance of their own when U.S. international Graham Zusi boldly struck from 20 yards out but Gspurning made the save.

Seattle were quick to respond in the form of a free kick from Martinez that evaded the wall and was goal-bound, but goalkeeper Jimmy Nielsen made a sliding save.

With two minutes remaining in the first half,  Sporting had their final chance of the first half when Ike Opara neatly headed down the ball down to Chance Myers, whose 20-yard volley was blocked by Gspurning.

The second half was relatively quiet until the 80th minute when Myers lofted in a pass headed for Kamara, but it was cleared out. Claudio Bieler settled the deflected ball and shot wide of the far post.

Three minutes later, Kamara, in his first MLS appearance of 2013, took a low shot from deep in the right corner, but Gspurning wasn’t phased and snuffed out the chance.

The match appeared headed for a draw until the fourth minute of stoppage time when Zach Scott’s throw-in fell to Traore, whoseshot sailed past Nielsen from close range.

Sporting Kansas City will return to the road to face Eastern Conference rival the Houston Dynamo at 7 p.m. CT on Sunday at BBVA Compass Stadium.

Kei+Kamara+Sporting+Kansas+City+v+New+England+d9gNeUss61Dl Sporting KC hosts Seattle Sounders on Wednesday in rematch of 2012 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup final

Sporting Kansas City welcomes the Seattle Sounders FC to Sporting Park at 7:30 p.m. CT on Wednesday in a rematch of the 2012 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup final. The two teams meet for the first time since Sporting Kansas City prevailed in a penalty kick shootout last August at Sporting Park to end the Sounders’ three-year reign as U.S. Open Cup champions.

Sporting Kansas City forward Kei Kamara, the team’s leading goal scorer each of the last three seasons, returned to the club on Monday upon the completion of his loan agreement with Norwich City FC of the Barclays Premier League. He scored one goal in 11 appearances for the Canaries and is expected to be available for selection on Wednesday after training with the team today.

The mid-week match-up comes three days after Sporting Kansas City posted a 4-0 victory over Chivas USA to move into first place in the Eastern Conference. Graham Zusi was named MLS Player of the Week with a goal and game-winning assist in the performance, while Designated Player Claudio Bieler added two goals to move into the League lead with six on the season.

Jimmy Nielsen leads the League with six shutouts, moving atop Sporting KC’s all-time chart with 38 clean sheets in his MLS career. Wednesday’s meeting will feature two of the top goalkeepers in MLS as Nielsen and Seattle’s Michael Gspurning were the only two goalkeepers with goals against averages below 1.00 last season.

Seattle enter the fixture unbeaten in their last four matches in all competition, but at the bottom of the Western Conference standings seven games into their season. Their trip to Sporting Park will be a third straight road match for Sigi Schmid’s squad, who are coming off a 2-2 draw at Philadelphia on Saturday.

Argentinean midfielder Mauro Rosales, the 2011 MLS Newcomer of the Year, contributed a goal and an assist in Seattle’s first multi-goal game of the campaign. Former KC forward Eddie Johnson scored his second goal of the season in the 10th minute en route to extending the team’s unbeaten streak to 34 games when scoring first.

The Sounders will be without forward Lamar Neagle and homegrown defender DeAndre Yedlin on Wednesday due to suspension after both players received red cards in the final 10 minutes of Saturday’s showdown with the Union. The visitors are also managing injuries to Designated Players Shalrie Joseph and Obafemi Martins, as well as former No. 1 overall SuperDraft selection Steve Zakuani. All three players missed the Sounders’ previous match along with two-time MLS All-Star Osvaldo Alonso due to personal reasons.

Schmid, the League’s all-time leader in wins with 195 MLS victories (including playoffs), has used 11 different lineups in the team’s 11 matches in all competition this year.

Sporting Kansas City is winless in their last six MLS matches against Seattle since winning the first-ever meeting between the two sides in 2009. The Sounders hold a 5-1-1 record in the all-time regular season series, including wins in all three MLS games played in Kansas City. In the lone MLS meeting a year ago, Sporting KC and Seattle split the points in a 1-1 draw at CenturyLink Field.

Bieler brace powers Sporting KC to 4 0 victory over Chivas USA

Nielsen sets Sporting KC’s all-time regular season shutout record

Claudio Bieler opened the scoring in the 41st minute with Graham Zusi claiming the assist. Bieler doubled Sporting KC’s lead in the 57th minute after converting a penalty kick drawn by Paulo Nagamura. Zusi added a goal to his tab in the 65th minute while Josh Gardner, in his debut for Sporting Kansas City, provided the assist. C.J. Sapong secured Sporting Kansas City’s victory in the 87th minute when he notched his first goal of the season.

Jimmy Nielsen’s clean sheet marked his 38th with the club, the most in team history.  The win also marked Peter Vermes’ 50th as manager for Sporting Kansas City.

The victory improved Sporting Kansas City’s record to 5-3-2 and puts them in a three-way tie for first place in the Eastern Conference.

It was Sporting Kansas CIty with the first chance of the match, arriving in the 10th minute when Zusi crossed the ball to Jacob Peterson, who did well to find space deep in the box and sent in a shot that was saved by goalkeeper Dan Kennedy.

Eight minutes later, Zusi played a similar ball across the mouth of the goal to Peterson, but it was just beyond his sliding reach.  The 21st minute saw another chance for the home team, orchestrated by Zusi once again when he evaded Chivas USA’s backline and nudged the ball out wide to Bieler, but his looping chip on frame was skillfully headed out by Joaquin Velazquez.

Peterson again proved to be a thorn in Chivas USA’s side when he found himself unmarked on the right flank, cut to the middle and shot low but Kennedy deflected the shot.

Sporting Kansas City’s persistence paid off  in the 41st minute when Peterson forced a turnover by Chivas USA, nudged the ball to Zusi who slid it to Bieler on the right.  The Argentinean Designated Player evaded Kennedy and shot a cool and collected ball into the back of the net, notching his fifth goal of the season while Zusi claimed his fourth assist.

In the third minute of stoppage time, Zusi nearly doubled Sporting Kansas City’s lead when he fired in a dangerous cross that went unmet.

The second half commenced with the same fervor and Sporting Kansas City dominating the game. In the 54th minute Kennedy denied Paulo Nagamura of a goal-scoring opportunity inside the box and was shown a red card prior to the penalty kick. Bieler converted the penalty, notching his second goal of the game and his sixth of the season.

Zusi tripled Sporting Kansas City’s lead in the 65th minute after her met  Gardner’s cross at the mouth of the goal, got a neat touch on it and sent it in past goalkeeper Patrick McLain. The goal marked Zusi’s third of the season and Gardner’s first assist.

Sporting Kansas City secured their victory with a fourth goal in the 87th minute with a strike from Sapong.  Mechack Jerome served in a low cross to the 2011 MLS Rookie of the Year, who re-directed the service with a first-time volley to the far post.

Coming into the match it was a question of who was going to be rotated with a midweek fixture to deal with but in the end Sporting Kansas City didn’t need their full strength side as they dispatched with Chivas USA 4-0 on a chilly Sunday afternoon.

While it would be easy to talk up the good performance by the offense, especially the brace for Claudio Bieler, it must be said that it was the solid defensive display by Sporting KC in the 38 shutout in the MLS career of club captain Jimmy Nielsen.

Former Wizard legend Tony Meola, MLS MVP in the 2000 championship season, previously held the record of 37 while at the club.  Nielsen is the 17th player to hit this number and did so in the fewest games played(104).

Aside from the landmark set by keeper Nielsen the second string back-line of Seth Sinovic, Aurelien Collin, Ike Opara, and Mechack Jerome was able to hold Chivas from having a shot on goal.

The defense has been the backbone of the squad in their successes and it must be said that with this result with two of the four typical members of the defense out there is evidence the the depth has been built and when the fixture list will thicken with the US Open Cup and CONCACAF Champions League there will be the trust of the fans in whomever is in the starting 11.

Up top it was the club designated player, Claudio Bieler, who scored a brace that was all that was needed. The first, before halftime Bieler needed to cut back to score. Bieler’s second came from the spot kick as he was brought down in the box by Chivas keeper Dan Kennedy, who was surprisingly issued his marching orders, putting it past new keeper Patrick McLain to give him six on the year; a place on top of the Golden Boot award.

The goal scoring was finished up by Graham Zusi and CJ Sapong who were able to benefit from being up a man as each goal was the cap on a strong offensive move involving many Sporting players.

With a match against Seattle Sounders, a re-match of the 2012 US Open Cup final, on Wednesday it would seem that Peter Vermes has been able to rotate his squad to meet the demands and with the good performances of the bench players it can be expected that

What Could Have Been…

So Saturday’s 1-0 loss to New York REALLY sucked, no?

The team finally looked poised to make a run over the next couple weeks as they knocked the ball around and kept Thierry Henry relatively quiet for most of the game. Hell, Federico Higuain even got a nice penalty kick to put a pretty bow on the three points that were surely headed Columbus’s way.

Then Higuain telegraphed his shot and Louis Robles kept the score level at 0-0.

After that New York sprang to life and eventually Tim Cahill headed home a rebound that flew just out of reach for Andy Gruenebaum.

Game…Set…Match…

It was an infuriating and agonizing result; a complete waste of potential. The players and coaches said as much after the game. The salt in the wound was, of course, Robert Warzycha waiting until beyond the 80th minute to make any sort of substitution or tactical change. As usual, I found myself second guessing the Polish Rifle’s lineup and tactical instructions; we all do it.

But then I started to dig a little deeper. I thought about all the good players who have left the Crew over the years. I thought about what Saturday’s game (and the rest of the season for that matter) would be like if things had broken differently for the Crew ever since their MLS Cup winning season in 2013. For the purposes of this discussion, I focused only on players the Crew have lost in Expansion drafts of years past. For example…

2008-Brad Evans (Seattle)

2009-Alejandro Moreno (Philadelphia)

2010-Eric Brunner/Adam Moffat (Portland)

2011-Josh Gardner (Montreal)

So let’s take care of the obvious first. Alejandro Moreno was on the last legs of his career when he departed for Philly in 2009 and Josh Gardner, while serviceable, was hardly a world beater at left back when he departed.

The other three guys, however, are a different story. Sure, Warzycha may never have utilized any of them or perhaps even traded them away eventually (come back Brian Carroll!) but let’s assume Evans, Brunner, and Moffat did progress and play regularly for Columbus. What would the line up look like today…

Gruenebaum

Williams – Marshall – Brunner – Wahl

Moffat

Gaven                  -                     Evans

Higuain

Arrieta      -         Oduro

OR

Gruenebaum

Williams – Marshall – Brunner – Wahl

Gaven – Moffat – Evans – Speas

Higuain

Arrieta

Wow. Just wow. Look at either of those lineups and tell me this team isn’t currently in first place in the East coming off an MLS Cup Final appearance. Suddenly there’s no question surrounding who will take over Chad Marshall in 2-3 years. There’s no debate about who is playing the center of the midfield. There’s tons of scoring options across said midfield.

If you really want to torture yourself like I did, just think about if Guillermo and Gino were the 1-2 coaching punch leading this group. What if a local ownership group suddenly came together out nowhere and came up with $200 million for a new stadium downtown; a la Kansas City’s recent gift from the heavens. Said stadium could’ve been put in the Arena District next to Nationwide and suddenly 19,000 are showing up for every game.

On and on it goes…

But we who are faithful to the MASSIVE club are not so fortunate. We must press on with what little we have and continue to hope for the best.

“Be Massive!!!”
