Heading into the 25th match of the season Newcastle are within 1 point of 4th place and a spot in the Champions League. Padrew has committed to the club, Double-Demba are ready for their assault on the Premier League, and we’re playing with that most people think is a rather weak defense. All things considered, its a great time to be a Newcastle supporter.
Although I have tried to remain optimistic this season, there are still issues that need to be addressed before I’ll feel comfortable regarding the immediate future of the club. We need to keep Spurs’ hands off of Pardew if/when Harry leaves for England, and more importantly we need to sort out the contract situations of quite a few players, mainly Colo and Ba.
I am sure the club will try to sort out the futures of its key players sooner rather than later, but I expect the players to take their time. If the club miss out on Europe what real incentive is their for Colo or Ba to stay? If we fall short of Europe Colo and Ba will certainly be off to a team playing in Europe next year. Champions League is not a must though. We need to focus on the clubs below us and hold our ground. I feel the Europa League is enough to keep a hold of our best players… assuming Ashley will pay them what they deserve.
With an away game at Spurs looming, Newcastle need to go for all 3 points. Liverpool and Arsenal are both likely to drop points. With VDV out and Spurs in turmoil regarding Redknapps future following a tough trial, Spurs surely won’t be at 100%. We need the breathing room.
We qualify for Europe and we keep Ba and Colo. If we fall short, they’ll leave. Its as simply as that.
