Huddersfield were
seeking for revenge as in the reverse fixture in the latter part of 2011 went
Charlton way at the valley when Charlton defeated Huddersfield 2-0 to stop
Huddersfield unbeaten run in the league which spanned forty three games.
Jordan Rhodes was
looking to add to his thirty-four goals this season, but was denied early on as
his header was brilliantly parried by Ben Hamer. Fifteen minutes into the game Huddersfield were awarded a
penalty when Gary Roberts was brought down in the area by Darryl Russell.
Jordan Rhodes stepped up and sent Charlton keeper Ben Hamer the wrong way. With
this goal Jordan Rhodes wrote himself in the history books at Huddersfield as
the Scottish international beat Iwan Roberts thirty-four goals set in the
1991-92 season, a post war record.
Rhodes went close again to adding to his tally when a corner from the
right found Lee Novak and his header goal bound was turned wide.
Charlton problems
were added in the second half as midfielder Darryl Russell was given a straight
red for violent conduct after a clash with Huddersfield midfielder Anthony Kay,
so Charlton had to play the remaining thirty four minutes with ten men. Charlton fought back and went close to
scoring when a long Danny Hollands throw in was headed just over the bar by
defender Leon Court. Charlton had yet another chance to equalise and it was
Leon Court who went close when a free kick from the right hand was headed
across goal and Leon Court headed wide of the up right.
Huddersfield held
on and claimed back-to-back victories after the Tuesday night win over
relegation threatened Chesterfield. With this result Huddersfield lay fourth on
seventy one points, just two points behind Sheffield United on which both have
a game in hand over the top two. With this defeat Charlton still lay on top of
the league but they seem to edging themselves over the finish line with seven
games to go. The lead is now only eight points over Sheffield Wednesday, we are
now coming to business end of the season.
