ENGLAND
Clint Dempsey had an assist in Fulham’s 2-1 win vs. Wigan Athletic over the weekend. The Cottagers have been on an unbeaten streak in their last four matches and move to 9th in the league. Dempsey and Fulham are currently tied at 46 points with Liverpool, but trail by a two goal differential.
After being knocked out of the FA Cup last week, Brad Friedel made two saves for Tottenham Hotspur in their 1-0 loss to Queens Park Rangers. With the loss, Spurs now slip to fifth in the league and are out of a Champions league spot with Newcastle United gaining the fourth spot. Spurs have not been able to get a win in the past four games. Tottenham and Friedel host relegation-threatened Blackburn Rovers on Sunday.
Tim Howard and Everton were able to get a 4-4 draw against league-leaders Manchester United on Sunday. The Toffees remain at seventh in the standings, 10 points behind Chelsea. Despite their loss last week in the semifinal of the FA Cup, Everton have gone undefeated in their past five league matches. On Saturday, Howard and the Toffees face off against Clint Dempsey and Fulham.
Eric Lichaj was once again in the starting line-up for Aston Villa in their scoreless draw against Sunderland on Saturday. The Villains has been facing several injuries among players and have not been able to get a win in over a month. They are currently 15th the in standings just three points above relegation after falling to Tim Ream and Bolton 2-1 on Tuesday.
Tim Ream went 90 minutes in defense for Bolton Wanderers in their 1-1 draw with Swansea City on Saturday. Prior to Tuesday’s victory over Villas, Bolton had not been able to get a win in their last five matches. The Wanderers now travel to Sunderland on Saturday in a crucial league battle.
Leeds United have announced that Robbie Rogers will be out for the remainder of Leed’s matches after injuring his ankle during last week’s match. Leeds sits in the middle of the pack at 13th in the Championship division. Leeds drew 1-1 against Cardiff City on Saturday and will host Leicester next weekend in their final league game of the season. Since joining Leeds in January, Rogers has not seen any playing time because of a concussion he suffered in his debut match.
Robbie Findley played 49 minutes for Nottingham Forest their 2-1 loss to eighth place Hull City on Saturday. Nottingham is currently at 20th in the Championship league with seven points above the relegation zone. Findley and his team face off against Portsmouth in their last game of the season.
ITALY
Michael Bradley and Chievo Verona lost 1-0 to Atalanta on Tuesday, just days after playing to a scoreless draw against Udinese on Saturday. Chievo’s match against Atalanta was rescheduled for Tuesday after all matches in Italy were postponed due to the passing of Livorno’s Piermario Morosini. Chievo drops to 10th in the standings behind Atalanta on goal differential. The Flying Donkeys travel to Cagliari on Saturday.
SCOTLAND
Carlos Bocanegra captained Rangers this weekend to a 3-0 win over Heart of Midlothian. Rangers captain Steven Davis is out with an injury. Maurice Edu also played 90 minutes in the match, while Alejandro Bedoya remained on the bench. The Light Blues remain in their second-place spot in the league and travel to first-place Celtic on Sunday. After holding a meeting to discuss the financial issues at Rangers FC, the Scottish Football Association has fined the club and issued a 12-month embargo on the signing of any players which could affect the current bids and sale of the club. The 12-month ban could ultimately hold back the team from rebuilding after all the recent hardships at the club.
GERMANY
Jermaine Jones picked up a yellow card in Schalke 04′s 1-1 draw against FC Augsburg on Sunday. Jones and his team remain in third place and currently hold a Champions League spot. Schalke and Jones host Alfredo Morales and relegation-threatened Hertha Berlin on Saturday.
Steve Cherundolo captained Hannover 96 to a scoreless draw with SC Freiburg on Sunday. The Lower Saxons remain at seventh in the league, just three points below a Europa League spot. Hannover plays Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday in their second to last game of the season.
Fabian Johnson was the only American on the field during Hoffenheim’s 1-0 loss to Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday. Neither Danny Williams nor Joe Gyau played in the match. Hoffenheim sit at ninth in the league and will host Timmy Chandler and Nurnberg on Saturday.
Timmy Chandler went the full match in FC Nurnberg’s 1-1 draw against Hamburg SV on Saturday. Nurnberg remains in 11th place in the standings with a one point lead over 12th place Mainz.
U-23 forward Andrew Wooten scored the game winner for Kaiserslautern in their 2-1 win over Hertha Berlin and fellow Yankee Alfredo Morales on Saturday. The goal marks Wooten’s first professional goal with Kaiserslautern. The win was the team’s first since last fall. Kaiserslautern still remains last in the league and face relegation.
NETHERLANDS
Jozy Altidore scored his 15th league goal this weekend in AZ Alkmaar’s 2-1 win over VVV Venlo. Altidore scored during last week’s match for AZ also and has now score 19 goals across all competitions this season.
DENMARK
Clarence Goodson and Brondby were defeated by FC Midtjylland 2-0 at home by two late goals.
Brondby slip to ninth in the standings, just three points below eighth place. Goodson and his team take on Conor O’Brien and seventh-place SonderjyskE on Saturday.
BELGIUM
Sacha Kljestan picked up a yellow card in RSC Anderlecht’s 1-0 shutout over second-place Club Brugge in a playoff match on Sunday. The win helped Les Mauves grow their lead over second-place to six points. Kljestan and his team travel to third-place Genk on Friday for their second to last game of the season.
PORTUGAL
Oguchi Onyewu returned to action over the weekend after being out since Febraury after sustaining a knee injury. Onyewu went 90 minutes for Sporting in their 3-2 win over Nacional de Madeira on Sunday. Sporting Lisbon are currently at fourth in the league and hold a Europa League spot. Sporting holds a one goal advantage over Athletic Bilbao going into the second leg of the semifinals of the Europa League after winning 2-1 last week. Onyewu and Sporting play the second leg against the Spanish side on Thursday. The team returns to league action next Monday when they face off against Académica.
MEXICO
Herculez Gomez and Santos Laguna remain at the top of the Clausura standings with a three point lead over second-place. Gomez went 57 minutes for Santos in their 3-0 shutout victory over Tigres on Saturday just days after being defeated 2-0 by Monterrey in the first leg of the CONCACAF Champions League final. Santos takes on Monterrey again this week for the second leg of the final. The team returns to league play on Saturday against Atlas.
Four Americans were on the field on Saturday during Club Tijuana’s 1-0 shutout win over San Luis. Michael Orozco Fiscal, who appeared for San Luis, was on the losing side of the night. Greg Garza made his first start since joining Tijuana, joining fellow Americans Edgar Castillo and Joe Corona. Club Tijuana sits at sixth in the standings, while San Luis is at 16th in the league. Orozco Fiscal and San Luis take on Toluca on Saturday. The day after that Tijuana hosts UNAM.
DaMarcus Beasley scored a goal in Puebla’s 3-2 loss to America on Sunday. Beasley’s team remains at 12th in the league tied with Atlante on points. Puebla travels to fourth-place U.A.N.L on Saturday.
Jose Torres went the full match in Pachuca’s 1-1 draw against Monterrey on Saturday. Los Tuzos are at seventh in the standings, just one point above eighth. Torres and his team host Guadalajara on Saturday.
