Serie A football returned this weekend after the European midweek and it was as you were as Roma and Juventus are joint top of the table after winning their opening three games. Juventus won the game of the weekend away at AC Milan on Saturday night thanks to a late winner from Carlos Tevez. Roma won comfortably 2-0 at home to Cagliari with two early goals in the first half from Mattia Destro and Alesandro Florenzi. Napoli horrible form continues as they were wretched in an away defeat at Udinese.
Saturday 20th September
The opening game of the weekend was two of the promoted side and it was Cesena vs. Empoli. Cesena threw away a 2-0 goal lead and was held 2-2. Guido Marilungo and Gregoire Defrel gave Cesena a 2-0 lead, Empoli pulled one back thanks to a Francesco Tavano spot kick and Daniele Rugani headed the equaliser from close range.
The second game of the evening was the top of the table clash in AC Milan and Juventus at a packed San Siro, both team were going into the game winning both of the opening games. Juventus won the game 1-0 in the second half thanks to a close range deflected strike from Carlos Tevez. This was a deserved win for the away side as they outplayed the hosts from start to finish. A win for Max Allegri against his former side who he got sacked from earlier in the year.
Sunday 21 September
The lunch time kick off was a winless Parma side travelling to Verona to take on Chievo. The flying donkeys took an early lead thanks to a deflected strike from Mariano Izco. Parma then hit back with three quick goals, two from Antonio Cassano and Massimo Coda. Chievo made it interesting in the final ten minutes with a second goal from Albert Paloschi, but Parma held on to get their first win of the season.
Lazio travelled to Genoa who have been their bogey side over the last couple of season, that continued as Genoa won the game late on thanks to Mauricio Pinilla diving header from a couple of yards out. Before the Genoa goal, Lazio were reduced to men as new Dutch centre back Stefan De Vrij was sent off.
Sassuolo and Sampdoria ended goalless
Roma made it 4 wins out 4 in all competitions just like Juventus did on Saturday night with a very comfortable 2-0 home win over Cagliari. Early goals from Mattia Destro and Alessandro Florenzi who after he scored ran in to the crowd to hug his grandma who was at the game.
Udinese hosted Napoli with the Stadio Friuli still under construction, two stands were opened and in a scrappy game Udinese won the game with a scrappy goal. Danilo got the only goal of the game after the Napoli defence failed to clear a Udinese free kick.
Fiorentina got their first league win of the season and made it two wins in a three days away at Atalanta. Jasmin Kurtic got the only goal of the game early in the second half with a low daisy cutter which went in off the upright.
Inter travelled to Palermo looking to make it three wins in the space of seven days, but it got off to a horrible start as a Nemanja Vidic mistake was capitalised by Franco Vasquez who scored from a tight angle to give Palermo the lead. Inter hit back just before half time thanks to a low Mateo Kovacic strike after a one-two with Pablo Osvaldo.
A struggling Torino side entertained Hellas Verona who have a bright start to their season, it was the away side who would come away with the points. Artur Ionita with the only goal for Hellas Verona and he was only on the pitch for a matter of minutes before he scored the only goal. Torino then had a penalty kick saved after Omar El Kaddouri spurned his chance to get the equaliser when his spot kick was saved by Rafael.
