In front of a sold out crowd, the Philadelphia Union finally put all the pieces together. The Union played an impressive game both defensively and offensively to defeat their I-95 rivals, the New York Red Bulls 3-1. Conor Casey once again opened the scoring for the home team in the 9th minute after an assist from Andrew Wenger. This was Casey’s 5th goal of season, making him second on the Union list of goals this year right behind Sebastian Le Toux. In the 51st minute, Fred secured his first goal of the year after an incidental assist from Conor Casey. The Union failed to achieve a clean sheet after Bradley Wright-Phillips netted his 15th goal in 12 games setting an all-time record. Sebastian Le Toux joined the score sheet in the 69th minute after making his 11th straight penalty kick for the Union.
Philadelphia’s win marks only the second home win for the team this year but also ended New York’s 5 game unbeaten streak. The Union have a few days to celebrate the win before the team heads to Chicago in hopes to earn a win on the road against the fire. The two teams met once this year in Early April ending in a hard fought 2-2 draw. With the win tonight, the Union keep their playoff hopes alive.
